What is Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery?
Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, also known as gastric sleeve surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to aid in weight loss for individuals with obesity. It involves removing a large portion of the stomach, leaving behind a smaller, banana-shaped “sleeve”.
The main goal of sleeve gastrectomy is to reduce the size of the stomach, limiting the amount of food that can be eaten at one time. This results in a decrease in calorie intake and promotes weight loss. The procedure also has metabolic effects, such as improvements in insulin resistance and hormonal changes that can help with the control of diabetes and other obesity-related conditions. Unlike Gastric Bypass, sleeve gastrectomy has minimal impact on nutrient absorption and reduces the risk of nutritional deficiencies compared to other bariatric procedures.
Success Story
How Does the Gastric Sleeve Procedure Work?
Sleeve gastrectomy works through a combination of mechanical and hormonal changes, including restriction and improved metabolic health. Removing about 80% of the stomach leaves a smaller stomach, reducing the food intake at one time. Patients feel full after eating smaller portions, leading to reduced caloric intake. The gastric sleeve Los Angeles surgery alters the production of hormones that affect hunger and satiety. While less invasive options like the Gastric Balloon can also aid in portion control and weight loss, sleeve gastrectomy typically results in more significant and sustained outcomes. Most importantly, patients experience improvements in obesity-related health problems like type II diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, fatty liver disease, and sleep apnea.
Who is a Good Candidate for Gastric Sleeve Surgery?
There are many factors that are taken into consideration to determine if you’re a good candidate for a sleeve gastrectomy, and our experienced surgeons can guide you through this during your initial consultation. MANY people qualify for bariatric surgery!
Below are some general considerations that can help determine whether someone is a suitable candidate for gastric sleeve los angeles, though the ultimate decision is between you and your weight loss surgeon:
- Body Mass Index (BMI): According to the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons, sleeve gastrectomy is recommended for any patient with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 and above with an associated medical comorbidity or any patient with a BMI of 35 and above.
- Failed attempts at weight loss: Candidates for sleeve gastrectomy have usually tried other weight loss methods, such as diet and exercise, without achieving sustainable results.
- Commitment to lifestyle changes: Sleeve gastrectomy requires a lifelong commitment to dietary and lifestyle changes. Candidates should be willing to adjust their eating habits, engage in regular physical activity, and follow postoperative guidelines to achieve long-term success.
- Understanding the risks and benefits: Candidates should have a comprehensive understanding of the risks, potential complications, and benefits associated with sleeve gastrectomy. This understanding helps individuals make an informed decision about whether the procedure is right for them.
- Medical evaluation: Candidates undergo a thorough medical evaluation to assess their overall health and identify any contraindications or underlying medical conditions that may affect the safety or outcome of the gastric sleeve. This evaluation may include assessments of cardiovascular health, pulmonary function, and any other relevant health conditions.

The Procedure Process
Pre-Procedure Requirements
At Torrance Bariatric Institute, we streamline the process leading up to surgery to make your journey to sustainable weight loss more achievable. We obtain a pre-operative nutrition panel, rule out medical or hormonal causes of obesity, and check your heart and lungs with a chest X-ray and an EKG. Psychiatric evaluation is a standard requirement of any bariatric program. An endoscopy is an important component of the pre-operative workup to identify any anatomic or structural abnormality that might change our operative plan. There is no requirement for weight loss or a protracted diet before bariatric surgery. In some patients, we recommend a low-carb diet known as the “Shrink the Liver” diet in order to decrease the size of the liver and make it safer for you. We review all pre-operative steps, peri-operative medications, and post-operative care in your dedicated pre-operative counseling session prior to your surgery.
The Big Day (The Day of the Procedure)
On the day of surgery, you will have a smooth experience. You will be registered and settled in your private suite, where you will be greeted by our world-class nursing team, surgeons, and anesthesiologists. The team will go over the details of your procedure with you and your loved ones one more time, and all your questions will be answered. You will then be taken to the operating room.
During the Procedure
Surgeries are performed laparoscopically or robotically via 4-5 small incisions. It lasts about 1-2 hours. When the procedure is complete, you will be recovered from anesthesia and transported back to the recovery unit.
Post-Procedure
Our patients are up and walking the same day of surgery and start drinking water and protein drinks the evening after the surgery. Most patients are discharged home the next morning. Most patients return to work within 1-2 weeks, though there is no strenuous activity for four weeks after surgery. There is a specialized phase diet after surgery that begins with clear liquids and progresses through thickened textures and solid foods until the completion of the recovery period, and you can eat normally again within 5-6 weeks.

Gastric Sleeve Los Angeles Surgery Results
Expected Results
Patients with a sleeve gastrectomy treatment plan can expect to lose about 30% of their body weight in the first 12-18 months after surgery. For example, if you weigh 300 lbs, you can expect to lose about 100 lbs. You can expect to see improvements in insulin resistance, blood pressure, cholesterol profile, and sleep apnea within 6 weeks to 3 months of surgery. With the implementation of a high-protein diet and establishing an active lifestyle with a blend of cardiovascular fitness and weight training, a majority of people achieve their weight loss goals and maintain their weight loss long-term.
How Long to See Results
Our patients see results in as little as six weeks. Metabolic response to the surgery with a reduction in the need for blood pressure or diabetic medications can happen quickly after surgery, and you may go home off some of your medications already. You can expect to lose 30% of your body weight in the first 12-18 months after surgery.
Long-Term Maintenance
Long-term weight loss is a triad of bariatric surgery, a healthy diet, and an active lifestyle, with each component equally important in long-term success. A high protein (1 gram per pound of ideal body weight a day), low carb, and high fiber diet is essential. A healthy life with an active lifestyle is a must to maintain weight loss, build skeletal muscle, reduce injuries, and maintain metabolic health. We recommend walking 10,000 steps daily and aim to strength train 3x per week.
